Personal Information

Colombian scientist who managed to synthesize a vaccine against malaria. He graduated in 1970 from the National University of Colombia and one year later he obtained his doctorate in medicine and surgery.

With a great interest in immunology and virology, so that his professional career was oriented to research in various national and foreign centers, particularly Americans and Swedes. At the National University, he founded the Institute of Immunology at the San Juan de Dios Hospital, where he developed research on lupus, genetic markers, leukemia, the genetic susceptibility of rheumatic fever, tuberculosis and leprosy.

This person is more influential because he is the father of the vaccines and winner of the basic science categories and he also discovered and patented the first vaccine against malaria and I frame it in its entire history.

Among the awards and acknowledgments that the researcher has received, we can cite honorary doctorates from the National, Tolima and Metropolitan of Barranquilla universities; the Leon Bernard Prize awarded by WHO; the appointment as an academic of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Madrid; the Prince of Asturias Award of 1994; and, among the decorations, those of Knight of the Order of San Carlos and Simón Bolívar, both of Colombia.
